MTL Electro: Montreal's Electronic Music Scene
Tolemn

Tolemn

Tolemn is a Montreal-based electronic music duo blending post-rock atmosphere with modern electronica. The project brings together Kirk Lau (synths, drum machines) and Michael Filtz (guitar, synths), two musicians originally from Southern California whose sound contrasts sun-drenched West Coast influences with the expansive, wintry landscapes of Montreal’s experimental music scene.

Early Releases and Sonic Direction
Since their debut EP Nevada Springs in 2020, Tolemn has steadily developed a distinctive hybrid of electronic production and guitar-driven post-rock. Their early releases—including Signs Vermillion (2021), shaped by the California wildfires and pandemic-era anxiety, and Cities Unravel, inspired by N. K. Jemisin’s The City We Became—explore themes of environment, urban transformation, and the emotional textures of contemporary life. Pulsing beats, angular guitar lines, and immersive synthesizers create cinematic soundscapes that move between introspection and intensity.

jango and the Thrill Jockey Influence
In 2024, Old Amherst Recordings released jango, the duo’s fourth EP. Developed through more than a year of live performances across Montreal, the record captured a rawer, performance-focused energy while drawing inspiration from the experimental spirit of the late-1990s and early-2000s post-rock scene—particularly the era when artists on Thrill Jockey Records were pushing the boundaries between instrumental rock and electronic music.

Marionette and Recent Performances
Tolemn’s latest EP, Marionette (2026), continues this exploration of the space between post-rock and electronica. The release features towering guitar builds, Y2K-era riffs, and layered electronic textures that combine the dynamics of post-rock with the pulse of contemporary electronic music. In 2025, the duo also toured with acclaimed French thereminist Grégoire Blanc, expanding their live show and introducing audiences to their evolving sound.

Montreal Post-Rock Electronica
Today, Tolemn stands as a distinctive voice in Montreal’s electronic and experimental music scene—crafting immersive instrumental music that bridges post-rock’s emotional crescendos with the rhythmic drive and sonic possibilities of modern electronica.
